fair days

yesterday, opening day, we went to the state fair for a few hours. they have some really good promotions going, and we happened to get in for 4 bucks. it was hot, too hot for what the weathermen here stupidly call "fall-like weather", but fun as always. we ate corny dogs, and i tried the new fried food winner this year, chicken fried bacon (shown below, and an immediate baby heart attack). big tex had some bright new clothes on, and the butter sculpture was amazing. next time we'll go in the evening, and i'll have some pics of the midway and my favorite carnival attractions.

fall art walk

last night we ventured out for a bit to stop by a few places on the deep ellum art walk, and on the way home we snapped the shot of a mural off lower greenville ave. it was rainy and windy, but not with as much drama as we had hoped (we needed more for the dry ground here). lots of people were out, so we saw lots of friends and met some new ones. check out the deep ellum blog here, and help save this neighborhood by getting yourself down there!

a project complete

i've been sick for a few days, which has been yucky, but the extra time sitting around has helped me meet my deadline of finishing a scarf for my sister by her birthday this weekend. it's only the second thing i've ever actually fully started and finished with knitting, and the first time i have used two different yarns in one project. i like the colors and the stripes.

italian market

next to the community garden is jimmy's, a very cool italian market and deli. we went to get some yummy sandwiches and cannoli's. it's crowded on a saturday with wine tastings and people shopping, but the food is worth the wait. and am i the only one who finds the stallion brick sign kinda funny?

community garden

yesterday we visited the east dallas community garden, where there is food for sale every weekend...actually every day (we've been told) in this season. it's pretty amazing. lots of asian vegetables and things i'd have to have a real recipe for, grown by refugee families. i especially like the way the vine vegetables are grown, so they hang down from a trellis, and take up less room in the garden.

slow economy

work has been slow. we still have the wallpaper, but it's under weight now and about to be done (thank goodness). this dali print is the only other thing we have approved right now, so today i removed some tape hinges and surfaced cleaned it, as well as inpainted some scratches and cuts caused by broken glass.

great taste, more filling

today we went to kalachandji's for lunch. it's very possible we might go again tomorrow. it's yummy, you can sit outside in the courtyard, and the gift shop rules.
