over the weekend we explored a neighborhood we weren't really familiar with, the cedars. we were able to see some neat artists spaces and old buildings during the cedars open studios day. it was inspiring, and fun, and free, and a great thing to do on a cool fall day. we'll definitely be back next year, and hopefully sometime in between.

we recently had a client bring in a chinese ancestor portrait. it was damaged in a fire, so it's in bad physical shape and has bits of plaster and other grime on the surface, as well as lots of water staining. the fabric around the portrait has suffered a lot of loss, and the silk is punctured and lifted away from the paper in some areas. yesterday i vacuumed and dry cleaned it, and tried to get some of the plaster off the surface...which will be easier to do once it is flat. next we will humidify and flatten it, clean it again, and then do mending and inpainting.

yesterday we tested out the paper marbling kit in preparation for the upcoming paper nerds workshop on december 7. it is so easy and fast, and now i am even more excited than before. i might even marble some paper strips so i can make marbled folded paper stars for ornaments. we did our tests on blank greeting cards, which we'll be using in the workshop. we'll also be making marbled bookmarks, gift tags, paper scraps, envelopes, and more.

earlier this week, shannon and i took a road trip to shreveport. here are some pics from that day...don't judge them too much, all i had was my iphone. we ate lunch at strawn's eat shop (all the walls had murals), famous for their strawberry pie. then gave a talk to the shreveport chapter of the DAR, because we worked on a parchment charter for them a few months ago. see more pics on shan's blog here.

the last time i was at the museum, i noticed the ivy on the walls of the sculpture garden growing like this, with the leaves sticking straight out individually looking for light, a reddish brown color and sparse because it's fall. i thought it looked so neat and the leaves looked perky but confused.

candlelight on henderson is tonight. fun, yummy, free (except for that you might empty your wallet shopping), and within walking distance for me and david. all of the merchants - milton kent antiques, another time & place, la mariposa, art is art, pandemonium, emeralds to coconuts, again & again, and gypsy wagon - will stay open late tonight, nov. 12 from 6-9 p.m. and offer finger foods, beverages and discounts. hooray for free holiday events.

today we went to cedar ridge preserve, only about 30 minutes from our house. it was a beautiful day, sunny and just a little bit cool. we went on a moderate two and a half mile hike with the doggies, and they did great. it was very quiet and lovely, and we took the trail to cattail pond. i think i heard some snakes along the way.

here are some details of a wifredo lam watercolor and ink drawing i have just started working on. i really like it. there is severe foxing and evidence of some kind of fungal growth, which i am going to reduce through washing (very carefully). i'll be taking the treatment in stages to see what kind of improvement i can get, but i have a hunch that initial washings will do it lots of good.

this is a detail of a silly happy puzzle david and i just finished. we are puzzle nerds, and we usually work on them in front of (or near) the tv, with the "fire it up" dvd on, which is a video of a roaring crackling fire. so even when it's warm in november, we can pretend it's cold...or when it's cold, we can sort of have a fire without having a real fireplace or paying for all the gas our fake fireplace space heater thing uses. most jigsaw puzzles you see now are totally cheesy, so i'm going to be on the hunt for actual cool looking ones, like this one, and these.
today we made these cute matchbook books. inside each are little pads of paper...just perfect for writing phone numbers on:) we'll be selling them at the BALLOD holiday trunk show on the 16th for $2 each, along with paper ornaments and gift cards, so come and get your stocking stuffers!

paper nerds will be selling some goods, including gift cards, at this trunk show...right after we wrap up the christmas ornament workshop that afternoon. there will be some neat (and very affordable) stuff, so come on by, and spread the word. help some gals out.

or maybe i should call it an almost no-show season in texas. we never get too much fall color around here, but on a walk with the dogs (the reason why these pics are fuzzy) i noticed some hints of warmer hues, mostly on the sides of trees facing east. since it's still in the damn 80's in november (after a very short cool snap) and we have a rain deficiency for the year, i doubt we'll have trees turn too much more than this. but it makes me happy to see the golds and reds, and the acorns on the ground. and to occasionally wear a light scarf.
