surprises during washing

i've been prepping for a bleaching workshop in san fran that i'm taking at the conservation lab at the legion of honor (i leave saturday) and i've got to bring some sample materials to play with. part of my preparation treatment is washing my sample objects, and i saw something while washing that i've never seen before...this is a pattern of stencil motifs and the design for a wooden chair. it's printed on manila paper. the carbon ink must have been printed on top of something else though, because the area around the media did not wet up, creating this pretty effect on the paper while wet. if anyone knows what this is, i'd be interested to find out. or maybe i'll let you know when i get back.
